On the heels of the Walmart acquisition of VIZIO, Roku has partnered with The Trade Desk, allowing TTD’s customers with access to Roku's data to enhance campaign optimization for streaming viewers via ACR data. This is in line with Roku’s partnerships strategy and creating more demand and collaboration within their walled garden to drive yield with enhanced audience precision, but this behind the velvet rope of PMP deals. AMC Networks Q2 2024 Earnings: Ended the quarter with 11.6M Domestic streaming subscribers, up 5% YoY, on streaming revenue of $150M, up 9% YoY. Overall, domestic advertising revenues decreased 11% to $149M due to linear ratings declines and a challenging ad market and Domestic Operations revenues decreased 7% to $538M, YoY. Affiliate revenues decreased 12% to $172M, primarily due to basic subscriber declines. International revenues decreased by 9% to $90M, YoY. If the FAST space was the Garden of Eden, Pluto TV is Adam. Thanks to major media companies like Paramount, FAST has the programming depth of cable for the monthly cost of Broadcast. With the variety of ways to access programming; from Streaming to Cable/Satellite, Main Street has a ton of choices and Madison Ave has a ton of questions. Hot take inspired by the article... Vanity v Sanity: - Vanity: Subs and MAUs, great that folks open the service, but in an ad supported industry, time spent creates supply. - Sanity: Who's the audience, how much inventory are they are generating, what are they actually watching (transparency) and how is it packaged? While we work in a business that trades time for treasure, there are nuances to how supply is bundled and sold.... vanity numbers allow us to rank and provide some type of order, but it's the sanity metrics that keep our marketplace healthy. Thanks to our company's mission of entertaining and informing the masses since 1912 we have: pioneered the motion picture, was 1 of 3 networks that brought sight, sound and motion into homes, personalized TV at the advent of Cable and entered the streaming battlefield in 2014 with Pluto and then CBS All Access, now Paramount+ ... so when I see the word "originals" as a reference point of quality and advantage I wonder beyond the "vanity" of it and think - Can we put our brand partners in the path of loyal fans, consuming long form content, across the entire pay model from Free to Paid, while making it easy and most importantly, successful? The answer is Yes, in part thx to our commitment to bulking up and marketing PlutoTV, but mostly b/c we have the endurance to produce popular content in volume and we know how to program in order to attract, retain and engage our audience 24/7/365... ultimately resulting in the "Sanity" of it all.. an enormous amount high thread count supply in well lit environments. cc: Paramount Advertising

Very insightful article shedding light on the interplay between SVOD and FAST services. Some consumers are shifting from subscriptions to FAST platforms, while others are finding new programs and subscribing to services. The hope is for both types of services to become more complimentary in the future. Great read!

As Paramount Global evaluates its strategy for all of its linear and streaming assets, multiple sources tell me that Pluto TV’s co-founder and current CEO of Paramount Streaming has been in discussions with the company about repurchasing it. These discussions started before the Skydance deal was announced, but I’m told no valuation has been placed on Pluto TV, and no official offer numbers have been exchanged. Interestingly, during the Paramount Global all-hands meeting on June 25th, employees say the company didn’t mention or include any reference to Pluto TV during the newly announced go-forward plan. Those who sat in smaller internal meetings also say the brand was absent from the discussions. Since the Skydance deal was announced, Skydance has featured Pluto TV as one of the six core pillars of the company on slide ten of its presentation. However, that doesn’t guarantee that Pluto TV, or any other content brand, will be part of the company going forward. During a call with investors after the Skydance deal was announced, Jeff Shell stated, “Current management is also talking about a couple of transactions that, if they get the right price, we’ll be supportive of.” So Paramount Global’s current management team can sell off assets and make deals they think will help the new management team as long as the new management team is consulted. The era of cable dominance is unraveling. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount wrote down $15 billion in cable network value, reflecting the declining relevance of channels like MTV, Comedy Central, and TNT. Now, Comcast plans to spin off its underperforming cable networks, minus Bravo, into a new entity tasked with absorbing other neglected assets. This "Island of Misfit Networks" echoes the forgotten toys of yore: quirky, flawed, and unwanted. FOR SALE BY OWNER Despite optimistic spin, it's clear these channels are relics of an outdated cable bundle model, once subsidized by uninterested subscribers to the tune of $1,500 per viewer in some cases. The idea of a NewCo offering palliative care to dying networks is futile. Instead, the industry should focus on adapting to the streaming age by investing in creators who thrive on digital platforms. As traditional networks fade into irrelevance, success lies in episodic storytelling that transcends platforms and formats, signaling the quiet end of the network era.

Comcast launching Universal Ads, a platform for SMBs to buy streaming inventory, points to two different paths for CTV’s evolution. One path is about making streaming available to reach and frequency buyers, including SMBs. The other is about making CTV a performance channel that can truly compete with search and social (which is why SMBs gravitate to Google and Meta). These two paths require completely different technologies, language, skill sets, sales approaches, optimization algorithms, reporting, media spend controls, data transparency and control, attribution analytics, etc. In other words, it’s great to put a lot of streaming inventory in one place and make it more accessible. But the bigger opportunity is making CTV capable of the very thing that has made search and social a $500 billion combined opportunity: unleashing fully measurable performance that advertisers trust. We are huge fans of democratizing TV advertising and applaud any effort to engage more advertisers in CTV. But to reach its full potential, CTV must deliver the same results for performance advertisers, including SMBs, that search and social do. #PerformanceTV #CTV

Roku appears to be gaining positive momentum, recently announcing a 14% jump in streaming households in Q2 & this latest report from Pixalate shows it with a dominate position in the global connected TV (CTV) programmatic advertising market. Another big winner was Apple, which increased its share of programmatic CTV ads delivered to the Apple TV from 5% to 13% over the last year, leapfrogging Amazon's FireTV. According to Pixalate measurement, Samsung Electronics share fell 45%, while arch rival LG Electronics grew its share 68%. To compile the data, Pixalate says it analysed programmatic advertising activity across 100k+ CTV apps & nearly 6bn global open programmatic ad transactions in Q2 2024.

I had to read this line a few times.... "Audio is a key part of the daily lives of all Americans, and this is true for sports fans, as well. In fact, sports fans spend six hours and 26 minutes with audio content each day—that’s over two hours more than the average American spends listening to audio." On first read I was trying to figure out how anybody has 6 hours and 26 minutes a day to consume sports content. Then eventually I understood this to mean that sports fans spend 6 hours and 26 minutes with ANY audio content. Essentially, sports fans are listening to music as well and have other interests beyond sports. But, being a sports fan skews your appetite for more audio consumption up. There is big opportunity here. But, there is also a lot of competition. #podcasting #sports #audio #radio
